Discourses on governance have received increasing attention in the recent past, among researchers, policy makers and all those pondering about development issues. Apart from the universal acknowledgement and acceptance of its importance, there are also differences in the theoretical formulation, policy prescription and conceptualization of what constitutes ‘governance’ and what is the process of ‘good governance’. The fact that discourses on good governance emerged from the multilateral agencies in the late 1980s and the institutions such as the World Bank granted currency and pursued dialogue on the issue, adds a new dimension to the discourse.
In any operating environment, well-governed organizations are more effective and more likely to be successful than poorly governed ones. It is because good governance systems focus on activities which contribute to achieve the objective for which the organisation exists. Good Governance is even more important for organizations in the voluntary sector, as compared to those in the for-profit sector as the voluntary organisations are required to deliver more services and are accountable to its members, donors and various stakeholders whereas the for-profit organisations are primarily accountable to their shareholders to provide a benefit in form of profits.
