The threat to our environment is one of the most critical issues that the human kind is facing currently. Although a lot of effort has been done, our relationship to the environment is seriously hampering some development efforts, especially in the 3rd world, and is likely to compromise the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in 2015 as scheduled.
To date, some of the most industrialized countries have not yet ratified the Kyoto protocol. The competition around the control of energy is leading to tension between countries and different groups of interest, while weakening the institutional mechanism set up by the UN.
Recent researches have shown that climate change may cause the displacement of population which in some cases can raise or intensify conflicts.
Although great advantages might be expected on both sides, the globalization of the economy offers a unique opportunity to transnational corporations (mainly from the North) to gain access to resources of the Southern countries under unfair conditions.
Nowadays, more and more organizations are aware of that situation. They try to mobilize the civil society at both national and international levels to raise these issues.
There is a need to promote and support a more integrated and sustainable approach to development that ensure the fundamental human rights and that the needs and interests of the future generations are safeguarded.
By undertaking joint actions on environmental issues, we hope to ensure that the G8 countries and the UN mechanism pay more attention on the implication of their decision in terms of protection of our environment.
