G8

es fr pt

In 1975, France took the initiative to bring together heads of states and Governments of Germany, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Italy for an informal meeting to discuss world affairs (dominated at that time by the oil crisis). This very select club opened up to Canada in 1976 and to the Russian Federation in 1998, thus forming the G8, a group of the world’s eight wealthiest countries . The heads of states of this very closed group of a contested representative nature have been regularly questioned by international solidarity NGOs on the important issues that particularly require a redistribution of wealth: official overseas development assistance, infrastructure financing, donations to solidarity funds, etc.

Since 2003, a regular consultation is organized between national NGO platforms of G8 member countries in order to have a greater impact on the agenda of these meetings. Carefully avoiding initiating a parallel G8 , partners and counterparts from the South are also invited to take part in this questioning process.

This informal group is formed by :

- Associazione Ong Italiane (Italy)

- British Overseas NGOs for Development (Great Britain)

- Canadian Council for International Co-operation (Canada)

Concord (European NGOs Confederation for Relief and Development, Europe)

- InterAction (United States)

- Japan NGO Center for International Cooperation (Japan)

- Association of German Development NGOs (G)

The G8 information center, an international research group, lists all the press releases of the last G8 summits.
